CASE STUDY OF AMATA: TRANSITION TO CLIMATE RESILIENT INDUSTRIAL PARK
The objective of the project was to develop an extensive master plan document, that would include a series of goals and guidelines to help transform an existing 42 square kilometers industrial park into a sustainable and innovative industrial estate development. Our research and design approach included landscape and industrial ecology planning to transform into a sustainable industrial park. More than 200,000 people currently commute to work everyday to Amata City. As part of this master plan and research project, estudioOCA developed a sustainable transportation network that worked together with the proposed green infrastructure project structure.
In order to look at issues such as flood, drought mitigation, sustainable transportation networks, and other environmental issues such as mangrove and wetlands restoration, we worked at three main scales: small (industrial estate site specific scale), medium (peri-urban scale) and large (regional scale).
This project aims to guide the development of a sustainable industrial area that simultaneously improves economic, social, and environmental conditions. Researching best practices, recommending the most impactful projects, and proposing feasible sustainable development processes.
A wide array of challenges increasingly threaten the health and quality of urban and industrial areas. Causing concern at a range of scales, the most critical challenges are posed by changing climatic conditions, environmental risks, as well as rapid urban and industrial growth. Risks most pertinent to Amata City Chonburi are flood and stormwater management, as well as negative effects from industrialization.
To overcome challenges and take advantage of opportunities, decision-makers, and industrial developers in particular, must rethink the way their developments are planned, infrastructures are built, services are offered, systems are linked, and communities are engaged. Given current risks and global conditions, future international industrial competitiveness will increasingly be linked to sustainability performance. The project focuses on using sustainable landscape and master planning, namely through green infrastructures, to identify, recommend, and outline green projects to implement to overcome relevant risks.
In short, this project included the development of a series of reports that led to the selection of green projects that could help transform Amata City Chonburi into a sustainable industrial estate.
Best practices for green and smart industrial development were determined by examining the most effective projects and strategies for sustainable industrial transformation through research of site characteristics and international case studies.
The products of this stage helped create implementation guidelines for sustainable practices and ideal green industrial performance, as well as served as a baseline to identify recommended green projects for the Amata estate.
Based on research of best practices, green projects were identified to provide potential development roadmap for the industrial estate. A total of seventeen green projects were recommended based on their effectiveness addressing the challenges and opportunities of the site. The list of green projects included an examination of the technical, economic, and implementation aspects of each.
The products of this project help provide a development roadmap to transform the existing Amata Chonburi estate into a sustainable industrial area that fosters the growth of the local and national economy, while creating a more climate resilient and environmentally friendly industrial area.
This project aimed to generate a holistic framework of green and smart development for industrial estates by reviewing site conditions, researching international best practices, and recommending the most impactful green projects. Reviewing site characteristics and development plans was critical to the approach for this project, including understanding and planning for short-, medium-, and long-term development as well as composing an integrated vision for the implementation and feasibility of recommended projects.

The impact of green projects was determined based on a wide a variety of inputs, including the key green and smart categories, implementation capacity, and stormwater management effectiveness, as well as economic, socio-economic, and environmental outcomes.
