COMMUNITY-LED GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT
estudioOCA worked in partnership with international team partners and the municipality of Malay on a project that promotes community-led resilience planning and makes funding available for implementing small-scale initiatives within selected urban and urbanizing areas.
Barangay Napaan is a rural settlement located in the predominantly agricultural municipality of Malay, Aklan Province in the Philippines. It was selected as the site for resilience issues prioritized by the community such as flash floods during the rainy season.
estudioOCA established a network of nature-based solutions using green infrastructure to mitigate flooding throughout the Napaan River basin, to help reduce the speed of water during storm surges as well as expanding infiltration zones that accommodate floodwaters, preventing communities from inundation caused by development upstream.
Reforestation also plays a critical role in the scheme to increase infiltration and reduce erosion that exacerbates flooding downstream.
